Questions and answers
Short answers to what people ask most.
Is Shadeline free?
Yes. Every feature is open, with no account, no ads and no payment.
Which places are covered?
The whole world. Terrain is available everywhere. Buildings appear wherever they are mapped in OpenStreetMap, which covers most cities and towns.
How accurate are the shadows?
The position of the sun is calculated to a small fraction of a degree. The shadows are as accurate as the building heights on the map: where a height is missing, the building is drawn at a default height and marked as estimated.
A building is missing or has the wrong height. What can I do?
Change its height in Building mode to correct your own view; the change is kept in the link you share. To fix it for everyone, edit the building on openstreetmap.org.
What is the sun-hours map?
A heat map of how many hours of direct sun each point of an area gets on the day you choose. The sun is sampled every 10 minutes from sunrise to sunset.
What does a point report show?
For the surface you tap: direct sun on the chosen day, sun hours over the year, annual solar irradiation in kWh/m² with monthly values, shading loss and sky view factor. You can export it as CSV.
Can I use the figures for a planning application or a solar contract?
Use them as a first estimate. They depend on open map data and climate averages, and they are not a certified daylight or yield study.
Can I look at a date in the past or the future?
Yes, any date. Times are shown in the local time of the place on the map, not of your device.
Are trees and new buildings included?
Trees are illustrative stand-ins in wooded areas, so the shade of a particular tree is not included. New buildings appear after they are mapped in OpenStreetMap.
How do I share what I see?
Use the share button. The link opens the same place, camera, date and time, with your building edits. You can also create a short link.
What data do you collect?
There is no account and no advertising. The site and app count anonymous visits and feature use in our own database, with no name, email, IP address or map position; on a phone this happens only if you allow it, and you can turn it off in Settings. Your location is used only if you ask the map to go to where you are, and it is not sent to us. A short link stores the view it describes. The privacy policy lists everything.
Which devices does it work on?
Any recent browser with WebGL 2, on a computer or a phone. Phones get their own layout. Apps for iPhone and Android are on the way.
Which languages are available?
English and Azerbaijani. Place names on the map stay in their local language.
